What is a pre-wedding shoot?
A pre-wedding shoot is simply an unhurried photography session before the wedding: time to walk, talk, settle in and make photographs that feel like you.
You may also hear it called an engagement shoot or couple session. The names overlap. What matters is that it is lower pressure than a wedding day and gives you space to become comfortable with the camera.
What actually happens?
We meet somewhere that suits you, usually take a walk and let the session build naturally. I offer gentle direction when it helps, but there is no need to arrive knowing how to pose. Most of the time you will be talking, moving and focusing on each other.
A typical session lasts around 60 to 90 minutes. That is long enough for the initial self-consciousness to fade and for us to create variety without turning it into an endurance test.
Why book one?
To feel comfortable before the wedding
If you worry that you are awkward in photographs, this is the most useful reason. You learn what the experience feels like and discover that you do not have to perform.
To make photographs with a purpose
Images can be used for save-the-dates, invitations, a wedding website, guest book or framed prints. They also document a part of your relationship that otherwise passes very quickly.
To choose somewhere meaningful
Unlike the wedding day, there is freedom to go somewhere connected to your story: a familiar walk, open hill, lakeside, town street or quiet place where you can relax.
What should you wear?
Wear something that feels like you on a good day. Comfort matters because stiff or unfamiliar clothes tend to change how you move. Neutral, earthy or softly coordinated colours work well outdoors, but there is no compulsory palette. Avoid large logos and bring a practical layer if the weather is uncertain.
Is it essential?
No. You can have beautiful wedding photographs without one. It is worth considering if you feel nervous about the camera, want photographs for wedding stationery, or simply like the idea of marking this stage properly.
What if it rains?
Light rain can make a session atmospheric, but comfort comes first. We can choose sheltered routes, adjust the start time or rearrange when conditions would stop you enjoying it. Wales rewards flexibility.
