Debi & Ryan’s Pen y Garreg Dam wedding
A rare ceremony in the heart of the Elan Valley, where the scale of Pen y Garreg Dam met a warm, intimate celebration with family, woodland portraits and two very good dogs.
Pen y Garreg Dam is one of the Elan Valley’s most recognisable landmarks, but very few people can say they were married there. Debi and Ryan’s celebration was only the third wedding the Elan Valley has hosted at the dam, making an already personal day part of a very small piece of local history.
The ceremony took place on the dam itself, dressed simply with soft greenery and white flowers. Beyond the stone parapet, the hills filled the horizon. It was an extraordinary backdrop, but it never overwhelmed the reason everyone was there: two people choosing each other, surrounded by those closest to them.

The beauty of this setting lies in the contrast. There is the monumental stonework and engineering of the dam, then the gentleness of the Elan Valley landscape around it. The ceremony chairs, flowers and small gathering gave the space a sense of intimacy without trying to compete with the view.
Moments that still felt completely natural
A remarkable venue does not need every photograph to be grand. One of my favourite frames from the day is Debi laughing as she wipes away a tear. It is unguarded, joyful and unmistakably hers. Those fleeting expressions are what turn photographs of a beautiful place into the story of a wedding.
The dam gave us architecture and sweeping views, while the surrounding roads and woodland offered something quieter. Debi and Ryan could step away for a short portrait without losing the relaxed rhythm of the day. Beneath the tall trees, the landscape became soft and still, letting their connection take the focus.
The character of the Elan Valley
From the top, Pen y Garreg feels open and expansive. Below, its immense stone wall rises from the wooded valley and the distinctive tower sits among the trees. Photographing both perspectives gives the wedding story a true sense of place: not just a ceremony with a view, but a celebration held within one of Mid Wales’s most dramatic landscapes.
The family portrait in front of the dam brings those two scales together. Debi, Ryan, their people and the dogs stand at the centre, while the architecture behind them records exactly where this unusual day happened. Formal photographs can still feel relaxed when everyone is allowed to look like themselves.
